I was wondering how to cut a normal sweater so that it hangs off the shoulder.
It's kind of a one chance deal with cutting the sweater so I was wondering how it should be done.

cut it from the neckline straight out to the edge of your shoulders, like making a slit. Go slow, as you don't want to cut too far, then then whole sweater is a gonner. Cut a couple of inches on each side. There is actually a seam line where you will be cutting. Then try the sweater on until you get the depth of the look that you want. In fact, if you go to the Goodwill, you might even find one like that on the rack!
To look at the sweater on a person, the neckline doesn't dip down in front to show cleavage, it shows off the tops of the shoulders and neck.Going to an 80's party and need advice how to cut a sweater for the 'off the shoulder look';?
Sweaters are rough -- they unravel if you cut them and can be a big mess! Maybe you should get an old sweatshirt or t-shirt, cut the neck bigger, try it on, and cut it bigger if it's not ';off the shoulder'; enough. Then, get your sweater, or preferably a different knit top and cut it with the ';template'; that you made from your old t-shirt or sweatshirt.
Best of luck! Have fun at the party!
The neck of the sweater needs to be stretched out. You CAN cut it, but you would have to make sure it's not a button down sweater first of all. And when you cut it, cut the ';collar'; off the neck but not so much on the front or back. This hard to explain. But I hope this helps some.
